Easter is coming up, and for a lot of people, it’s just a longbank holiday weekend, some pastel-coloured outfits, and way too much chocolate (not that I’m complaining… please, pass the Lindt bunnies).
But let’s talk about what it really means.
Easter is about Jesus. The cross. The empty tomb. The greatest plot twist in history, the one witnessed and the one marveled at.
See, Good Friday? That was pain, sacrifice, the weight of all sin being carried by a man who didn’t deserve it. Jesus took our place.
And on Sunday? Victory.
Jesus rose from the dead, proving once and for all that death doesn’t win - ever. Sin doesn’t win - ever. He wins - forever. And because of that, so do we.
The Biblical Story: A Love That Conquered Death
Easter is a time to dwell on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. After living a sinless life, Jesus was betrayed, arrested, and sentenced to death by crucifixion. The weight of our sins was placed on Him, and as He took His final breath on the cross, He declared,
“It is finished” John 19:30
At that moment, the veil in the temple tore in two, signifying that the barrier between humanity and God had been removed, there was no need for a priest because Jesus became the ultimate High-Priest. There was no longer a barrier between us and God.
But here’s the plot twist… three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, proving that death had NO hold on Him.
In Matthew 28:6, the angel told the women at the tomb, "He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.”
This wasn’t just a miracle, it was a fulfilment of God’s promise, securing salvation for all who believe in Him. A fulfillment of scripture, of Jewish teachings that came to completion through Jesus Christ.
Why Easter Matters
At its core, Easter is about VICTORY!
Jesus conquered sin, death, and grave, giving us the chance at eternal life. The story begins with Good Friday, the darkest day when Jesus willingly took on the weight of our sins and was crucified. But the story doesn’t end there… three days later, the tomb was empty. Death couldn’t hold Him. This moment changed everything; offering hope, grace, and redemption to all who believe.
The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our faith. Without it, Christianity wouldn’t even exist. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” But because He lives, we have hope. We’re no longer bound by sin, fear, or death
“He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.” — Matthew 28:6
Easter is the ultimate proof that God’s love is relentless, and His power is unmatched. He gave His only son so that we may have a chance at life.
The Power of Resurrection in Our Lives
Easter isn’t just an event from 2,000 years ago; it’s a personal and active invitation. Jesus’ resurrection symbolizes fresh starts, second chances, and the power of faith. Whatever dead situations you feel stuck in whatever doubt, fear, or past mistakes that are strongholds over you right now? Easter reminds us that through Christ, we can rise again, those chains are broken in the name of our mighty God.
New Life: Just as Jesus walked out of the tomb, we are called to walk in newness of life. Easter is a season to release old burdens and step into the purpose God has for us.
Unshakeable Hope: In a world that often feels chaotic and hopeless, the resurrection is a reminder that God is in control. No situation is too far gone, no mistake is too big. If God can raise the dead, He can resurrect your dreams, your faith, and your joy.
But What Does That Actually Mean for You?
- It means you’re FORGIVEN. No matter what mistakes you’ve made, Jesus already paid the price. You don’t have to be perfect, just open-hearted.
- It means you’re LOVED. Not because of what you do, but because of who YOU are; a child of God.
- It means you’re FREE. You don’t have to be weighed down by guilt, shame, or fear. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave is in you (Romans 8:11).
How We Can Live Out the Message of Easter
- Walk in Freedom – Jesus died and rose again so that we could be free. Don’t let guilt or shame keep you stuck. Romans 8:1 reminds us, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
- Share the Good News – The resurrection wasn’t meant to be kept secret. Just as the disciples spread the message, we’re called to share the hope of Jesus with others. Whether that’s inviting someone to church, sharing your testimony, or simply living out your faith, let His light shine through you.
- Reflect on His Sacrifice – Take time to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection (Matthew 26-28, Mark 14-16, Luke 22-24, John 18-20). Meditate on what His sacrifice means for your life.
Final Thoughts
Easter isn’t just another day on the calendar; it’s a celebration of victory, love, and new life. Whether you’re spending it with family, at church, or in quiet reflection, remember this: Jesus overcame the grave, and because of that, we have an eternal, living hope.
So, as you enjoy the celebrations, the meals, and yes, even the chocolate, let the true meaning of Easter dwell in your heart: because He lives, we can face tomorrow with confidence and joy.
And remember, when you’re digging into that chocolate egg, gutted that it's hollow and empty inside, keep this in mind: the tomb is EMPTY, and hope is ALIVE.
That’s the Easter miracle.
